Celebrating Iconic Mothers in Video Games on Mother's Day

Feb 25, 2025

We play video games for many reasons: jaw-dropping graphics, immersive storylines, fun game-playing experiences, and well-rounded characters.

When we think of the most famous gaming characters from our favourite video games, we’re instantly transported into their exciting and stimulating worlds.

It’s not just the central male or female heroes who capture players' attention, mothers in video games have also had impactful roles. Although motherhood as a concept has yet to be fully explored in gaming, multiple iconic gaming series feature a mum whose role and character are integral to the story and the game.

Mother’s Day will be celebrated on March 30th this year. In recognition of this, Just Geek commemorates 5 iconic gaming mums who’ve made a lasting impact in your favourite video gaming series.

1. The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3)

You can't leave out The Boss from the Metal Gear Solid franchise when listing some of the most famous gaming characters that also happen to be mums. The Boss is a mother and a deadly one at that. This gaming mum might not be a contender for the best mother in the world, but she’s certainly one of the deadliest.

The Boss is the biological mother to Revolver Ocelot and mentor to Naked Snake, and she takes both her roles very seriously. In fact, without her, many pivotal events in the Metal Gear Solid games would never take place.

The Boss may stand out as a less-than-traditional mum, but she possesses the maternal attributes of strength, skill, and selflessness. She’s both a mother and a truly iconic gaming character.

The Boss’ fearlessness and strength are all the more reason to have this Metal Gear merchandise on your side. Grab our Metal Gear Solid: The Boss - FUNKO POP! from our Metal Gear Solid collection.

2. Freya (God of War)

gaming mum, Atreus from God of War in a box

Freya from the God of War franchise is one of the most famous mother characters in video games. Despite a powerful position as the former Queen of Asguard and the Valkyries, her life is fraught with complicated relationships.

As Odin’s ex-wife, Freya felt one of the few good things to come from that relationship was her son Baldur.

Like any mother, Freya loved Baldur deeply. She even goes as far as casting a spell to protect him after she learns of a prophecy that predicts his death. Her spell protects him not only from any harm but from all forms of sensation, even pleasure. Her overprotection comes at a cost when Baldur tries to kill her when Freya refuses to revoke the spell.

But in the commotion, Kratos kills Baldur, and Freya swears revenge. While her love for her son is clear, her overprotectiveness ultimately leads to this unpredictable tragedy.

3. Mia Winters (Resident Evil)

mothers in video games, Lamp of Umbrella Corp from Resident Evil

Mia Winters underwent a tough time after she was imprisoned and experimented on by Mother Miranda at the start of Resident Evil 8. Even after experiencing such a traumatic ordeal, the safety of her daughter, Rosemary, and her husband, Ethan, was her primary concern after being rescued. Such was her dedication to her family.

Although players didn’t see much of her throughout the franchise, Mia’s presence was certainly felt. She was a significant influence on her daughter, as Rosemary became a considerably strong and powerful woman as evident in the game’s final cutscene.

4. Clementine (The Walking Dead)

Parenting can be messy, and perhaps Clementine from The Walking Dead - A New Frontier and The Final Season exemplifies this. She’s far from the perfect parent but gets full marks for trying her best as Alvin Jr.’s teenage guardian during a zombie apocalypse.

We see this mother video game character struggle, falter and fall, but despite the challenges, she does her best to care for and protect AJ while learning and growing as a parent.

Clementine’s character proves that, as our mums already know, love and growth can make a world of difference - especially in the worst of times. Show your mum you care, and make this Mother’s Day one she’ll cherish and remember forever.

5. Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat)

most famous gaming characters, A red Mortal Kombat gaming mousepad

The original Mortal Kombat saw Sonya Blade as the sole playable female character. It’s no surprise that she was considered among the franchise’s most popular characters and has become one of the most celebrated mothers in video games. Sonya’s character entered a new dimension in Mortal Kombat X after having a baby with Johnny Cage. As a mum to Cassie Cage, Sonya’s care and protection for her daughter significantly grew in Mortal Kombat 11.

Early into the game, players witness her undying love for Cassie when Sonya willingly sacrifices herself to save her daughter’s life, proving how far she’ll go for the sake of her family. It’s evident how Sonya’s character evolves along with her strength as a fighter, becoming a mother who will risk her life for her child. Raise a toast to incredible mum characters like Sonya by purchasing the latest Mortal Kombat merchandise, like this awesome Gaming Mousepad.
